Phthalates in Pregnancy: The Endocrine Disruptors That May Affect Fetal Growth and Brain Development
Pregnancy is a period of rapid hormonal and neurological development. That makes exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) particularly important and phthalates are among the chemicals researchers are watching closely.
Phthalates are plasticizing chemicals used in many everyday products, including plastics, packaging, cosmetics and personal-care products. They can enter the body through food, indoor dust, inhalation and skin contact. Importantly, phthalates do not all behave the same way, and the strength of evidence varies by compound and health outcome.
Why are phthalates called endocrine disruptors?
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals capable of interfering with the body's hormonal signaling.
During pregnancy, hormones help regulate placental function, fetal growth, metabolism and brain development. Experimental and human research suggests that certain phthalates can interfere with hormone pathways, while also promoting oxidative stress, inflammation and changes in DNA methylation.
That matters because fetal development depends on precisely timed biological signals not simply on the amount of a chemical present.
Can phthalates affect fetal growth?
Possibly. The evidence suggests an association, but it is not uniform across all phthalates or pregnancies.
Research has linked prenatal exposure to some phthalate metabolites with measures such as lower birth weight and fetal growth restriction. A 2023 meta-analysis found negative associations between certain metabolites, including mono-n-butyl phthalate and mono-methyl phthalate, and birth weight. However, another meta-analysis found no overall significant association between mixed phthalate exposure and birth weight, highlighting how inconsistent the evidence can be.
The 2024 systematic review of more than 100 studies also identified prenatal phthalate exposure as a potential contributor to pregnancy complications and altered fetal development.
The takeaway: phthalates should be viewed as a potential modifiable exposure, not as a proven cause of poor fetal growth.
What about the baby's brain?
This is where the research becomes especially interesting.
The fetal brain undergoes rapid processes including neuron formation, migration, synapse development and maturation. Researchers have proposed that endocrine disruption, oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways may interfere with these processes.
Human studies have reported associations between prenatal phthalate exposure and differences in motor skills, cognition, language and behavior. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of prenatal endocrine-disrupting chemical exposure found that phthalates were associated with poorer motor development in children aged 1–3 years.
But calling this “brain damage” would go beyond the evidence.
Current human research generally shows associations with neurodevelopmental outcomes—not proof that phthalates directly cause structural brain damage or neurological disease. Earlier systematic reviews have also found inconsistent results between individual phthalates, developmental outcomes and child sex.
Which phthalates deserve attention?

- DBP dibutyl phthalate
- BBP benzyl butyl phthalate
- DEP diethyl phthalate
- DiBP Di isobutyl phthalate
DEHP, in particular, has been investigated extensively for potential effects on fetal development and neurodevelopment.
Should you panic during pregnancy?
No. The goal is exposure reduction, not fear.
Phthalate exposure is widespread, and completely eliminating exposure is unrealistic. But practical choices can reduce unnecessary exposure:
Check personal-care labels, avoid heating food in plastic, reduce heavily packaged foods when practical, wash hands before eating, and limit unnecessary contact with fragranced products when a phthalate-free alternative is available.
And remember: using one product containing a phthalate does not mean your baby will develop a problem. Risk depends on the chemical, dose, timing, duration and overall exposure pattern.
The bottom line
Phthalates are biologically active chemicals that can interfere with endocrine signaling, and research increasingly suggests that prenatal exposure to some phthalates may be associated with fetal growth and neurodevelopmental differences. But the evidence is not strong enough to say that phthalates directly cause “brain damage.”
For pregnancy, the scientifically sensible approach is simple: reduce avoidable exposure without turning pregnancy into a chemical checklist.
